The Sirens

Greek mythology has never failed to fascinate..... and sure,I am not alone in this. If you have not done it yet,  I recommend to start immediately... if you are glued to  Harry Potter  and wonder how wild imagination can get... then this will be your cup of tea- a hot, steaming cup- I can guarantee you that. Today I read about sirens- The Sirens. A group of three or four girls who sing exceptionally well.....wait, then they are no different from any girl band... this can be a bit misleading....Well, they are sea nymphs with a human face and a bird’s body. The myth says they were with Persephone (daughter of Demeter-the earth goddess and Zeus) when she was abducted by Hades- God of the Underworld, but didn’t ( or couldn’t) protect her and so , were cursed by the angry mother.

Back to the music....they sing exceptionally well....But the exception stretches to the purpose too.....they live in an island and sing to attract the mariners, and the ships wreck...(That was vicious).

The stories of the irresistibility of the music are also...exceptional. While Odysseus tied himself to the masts of the ship so that he can listen to them without running to them, some sailors filled their ears with wax.  Orpheus played his harp to drown their song and save sailors in his ship. When they saw a man escaping their song, they drowned themselves.....(Hurt ego?)

When the music is that good, the purpose can be forgiven......right?
